Grange over Sands - Ian Tunbridge
A late decision to lead the group using a route from the chairman!
Myself, Mick B, Dave B and Paul W were at the Bell, setting off the well used route to Caton which was brightened by whistles and calls from young ladies from a passing car probably because we had our legs on show, they passed twice more, then we realised they may have been admiring the bright Pink helmet by Mr W! One of the group also divulged the previous nights training, a hard interval session, two sets of 5 miles including a mid session set of a pub stop, the first interval had been so tough a raging thirst needed quenching. The pints soon worked there way out up Green Lane and Laverick Rd. After Borwick a winding quiet Lane route took us through Holme, Ackenthwaite ending up at Leasgill, a quick roadside snack and off through Levens and the cycle way to Grange. Finding the well recommended Pie shop the display and choice was superb we took a leisurely stop to consume the fantastic produce at the Library bench opposite.
Setting off we waited at the bottom of the hill for Mr W, after a few minutes he arrived peddling furiously like hamster on a wheel with his gears stuck in the low gear giving him a top speed of 10mph at a cadence of 120+! Much fiddling and connecting to another bike couldn’t solve the mystery of the failed Di2, not a schoolboy error of forgetting to charge as this was topped up the night before.
Instead of dumping Mr W and laughing all the way home we opted to give assistance by pushing him along, many walkers and drivers must have taken pity on the apparent bearded lady in the Pink helmet being pushed by 3 hardened Castelli men!!!! This continued for the next 10 miles to the A6 where Mr W opted to declare his intention to spend as much as he could in the pub to await rescue....
The remaining group sped off nursing sore backs, shoulders and arms to wander the hills round Haverback and Yealand Storrs. Time was pressing on so the route changed to a blast down the A6 and the cycle path through Lancaster then through Aldcliffe towards Cockerham where the revived Mick used the remaining energy to up the pace. Parting ways at the Manor we headed home after an eventful but enjoyable day with good company.
