B2 Very Wet Ride to somewhere completely different- By Martin Oglesby
B2’s Ride Report, 20/01/2018 : SHORT AND SWEET
The sunny spell forecast all week for Saturday was replaced with rain and sleet and Max. 2 deg. C, so the forecast for rider numbers was equally low.
Three hardy souls (foolhardy ?) turned out: myself, Shane B and Dave H. None of us relished the prospect of the planned 50 miler to Hest Bank so we agreed to stay nearer home in case the weather took a turn for the worse.
The revised plan was a simple out and back to Knott End. We sailed along Skitham Ln at around 13 knots without the usual headwind, but knot enough tailwind to hoist the spinnaker. As a past resident of Preesall, Dave H was calling the slots from his local knowledge. Passing between Dry Bread Ln and Turkey St (Christmas left-overs ?) we headed NW to eventually arrive at K.E. cafe, where tea and toasted teacakes were taken on board.
Departing E. along The Esplanade the return leg took us down Green Dick’s Ln (it’s not contagious) and past Pilling Pottery (no longer a cafe I was informed). We galloped along Horse Park Ln and eventually through Winmarleigh to emerge on the B road from Cockerham to Garstang.
An easy ride of just under 30 miles, but it was more about the discipline of getting out on the bikes on a Saturday with GCC. With plenty of layers on I never felt cold once moving, but still appreciated a hot shower on returning home.
Oh, and with no punctures or mechanicals, 100% of the riders departing also made it back to basecamp; much better than 1 /10 the last time I was RC.
